You have almost an unlimited number of possibilities when it comes to worktops for your kitchen renovation and remodel. You can go with a low end laminate worktop which actually is very durable and quite long lasting considering how inexpensive it is. Also, you can go with a high end product such as black granite worktops. These are absolutely awe inspiring but they carry a hefty price tag and are very difficult to install for a do-it-yourselfer because they are so heavy.

If you are looking for a middle of the road choice that can still give your kitchen an elegant look you want to consider a solid wood worktop. In particular, oak worktops are very popular for several reasons not the least of which is the comfortable natural feel they lend to a room.

Oak can be found in several hues from blond, which is very light in color, to a very dark brown. On top of the natural colorings in the wood you can choose almost any color stain you want to tint the wood but still allow the grain structure to show through. The grain of the wood in an oak is often times very interesting especially if the tree was under some sort of distress as it grew. This tends to cause the tree to be stunted and knarled which can provide free flowing grain patterns or more structured looks such as birds eye.

Oak is a very durable and tough wood so there is no concern about setting a heavy pot on the edge and breaking the work top. As with any wood, this one does not like heat so it is possible to scorch the surface if you set a hot pan or pot down. Always be careful to use hot pads and you won’t have any problems. If you do happen to get a burn spot just sand it out and refinish. Some people think these blemishes actually add to the look of the worktop.

If you are doing a kitchen remodel don’t forget to check out solid oak worktops before going with something more expensive.

When designing or remodeling a home the kitchen is always a difficult area due so many possibilities in a relatively small space: cabinetry, flooring, lighting, furniture and perhaps most importantly…the kitchen appliances. It is essential to choose appliances that match your decor, lifestyle and personality but are also functionally practical. Do you prefer black, white, or stainless steel? Do you need a large refrigerator or will a smaller one suffice? Do you prefer a gas or electric range? Would you wan an under cabinet or counter top microwave? All these things must be considered as one is choosing kitchen appliances but with a little research, making the right choice for you can be made simple.

Refrigerators are one of the biggest expenses when design a kitchen. Many homeowners are pulled in and confused by the many types and functions offered in this area but the key is to know what you need and want and get exactly that. The refrigerator should match the decor or colors scheme of the kitchen but most appliance colors are neutral and can be used with basically any color so this is really a matter of preference (colors are typically black, white, or stainless steel. The other issue to be considered when choosing a fridge is the size. A couple with no children that spends little time at home, could utilize a much smaller refrigerator than a family of five that spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

The range (oven/stove) is yet another decision that can be difficult to make as there are many options available in this area as well. The stove and refrigerator should match in color and you MUST know if you are hooking up to gas or electric before making this purchase. Next, the homeowners must decide if the want a flat or raised cooking surface (flat is recommended for safety purposes by most electricians). If you know these three things when choosing an oven, the choice should be relatively simple.

Dishwashers are another must have appliance in the kitchen and again should match the color palette of the other appliances. Choosing a brand can be difficult but remember, a Maytag brand dishwasher is guaranteed for life. The size is an issue here as well and you should know the size you need before making this major purchase. Again, a couple with no children that spends little time at home, could utilize a much smaller capacity dishwasher than a family of five that spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

The microwave is perhaps the simplest choice when choosing kitchen appliances. All the consumer needs to know is their color palette, where the microwave will go (under a cabinet or on a counter top) and what size is needed. As always, the more people that will be using this appliance, the higher wattage and bigger size it should be.

When designing a new kitchen or remodeling an old one, choosing kitchen appliances is never easy. Just remember to know what you need, what you want, the size you need it in, and the type of heat you prefer (electric or gas) and homeowner can arm themselves with the tools and knowledge to make the right choices for themselves and their new kitchen.

Kitchens in Edinburgh are not a one-size fits all. Each kitchen design takes in several factors and the kitchen design is drafted from there.

These factors are the size of the kitchen, the shape and how the kitchen will be used. The place to start is the kitchen size. Measure the walls and put the measurements on paper. Walls can be moved, however, it is time consuming and very, very expensive. Most people prefer or need to leave the walls where they are. If you can use the same wiring and plumbing, you will save time and money.

Once you know the size of the space you are working with, locate where the hob, fridge, microwave and sink will go. When you start the kitchen design, it is easier to start with the sink, food preparation area and hob. Make sure the distance between these is not too large. Then place the fridge and make sure this works for you. Placing the fridge near the main entrance allows others to quickly grab drinks or snacks. The longest unit is usually the sink, drainer and dishwasher, so put that in first.

The kitchen shape depends a lot on the space. The four main shapes for Edinburgh kitchens are galley, two-way kitchens, and L-shaped and U-shaped kitchens.

Galley kitchens are along one wall and need to be designed carefully to include enough storage and worktop space. Two-way galley kitchens have two counters facing each other. Be sure to leave enough room to fully open your oven and dishwater.

The L-shaped kitchen gives a lot of storage area and still leaves an open space for a dining table. The corner space can be used for deep storage. The U-shaped kitchen gives a lot of worktop and storage. It is a more enclosed space with less floor space. One leg of the worktop could double as a breakfast bar and opens the room up.

The next item to consider in kitchens in Edinburgh is the use of the kitchen. The kitchen is the centre of the house. Consider your lifestyle to have a kitchen design that works for you. A kitchen of a family is different than of a single person who eats out a lot. Think about storage space you need, the things you have, and work around this.

A well thought out kitchen design makes the kitchen installation easy for kitchen fitters.

Kitchen curtains are not just means of covering up windows where we might want a little privacy. They are also a means to decorate a kitchen with our own personal taste. Although kitchens come in all shapes and colors, most people opt for a classic design so that the kitchen does not date too quickly. This is important especially if you plan on selling your home in the next few years. However, as this classic look is found everywhere, it can make your kitchen look bland and boring. Kitchen curtains are a way of personalizing your space and making your kitchen unique. And if they become out of date they can be easily changed – or at least more easily than remodeling your whole kitchen.

So, how do you select curtains for the kitchen that will give it a special touch?

1. Choose a Bold Color

Curtains are a great way of adding color to your kitchen so try to avoid going neutral with the aim of matching your neutral kitchen. If you chose something like lime green or orange you could make a real feature of your window and also use the color for accessories in the room to give an instant uplift to your kitchen decoration.

2. Choose a Simple Style

Avoid the temptation to buy kitchen curtains which are too fussy as the kitchen is such an informal room that simple styles are more appropriate. You can make more of an impact with plain curtain panels and tab tops than you can with frilly edges and valances.

3. Choose a Striking Design

There is no need to choose a plain fabric for your curtains. If your colors are bold and your style simple, why not go for a striking design too as the plain panels will really show it off at its best? A strong design will look especially good in a contemporary kitchen.
