Different Types of Carpet Underlay

You will find several different types of carpet underlay for sale, all of which have their own unique benefits to keeping your home warm during the cold winter months.

On the lowest cost end is the rubber waffle. Today’s rubber waffle padding is much better in quality than that of several years ago. It no longer disintegrates or breaks down like the older underlay did. The air space makes for the softest carpets available. Choose the heaver weights or thicknesses for the longest wear.

Urethane underlay for carpets is a recycled product. Padding and cushions from old furniture is stripped away and broken down into chunks that are bonded together to make the carpet pad. Quality of this pad is measured in density. You should choose a density of five to eight pounds per square foot. The amount of traffic in your home will determine the quality of pad you should choose.

For the longest lasting pad, choose flat rubber. While it is sometimes hard to find and may cost more, it may outlast the original carpet that is laid over it and be used for a second time.

With underfloor heating systems, you will want to choose a special underlay that is made just for your heating system. Since the heat must rise through the pad and carpet, choose a pad with a low insulating value. This prevents the dangerous situation of heat being trapped under the carpet and pad and also allows the heat you are paying for to enter and heat your home. The insulating value of carpet underlay is measured in the unit of “togs” and you want to choose a pad rated at less than one tog.

Whichever cheap carpet underlay you choose to purchase, make sure it is compatible with the carpet which is to be laid on top.
