Hardwood Doors Are The Best

Hardwood has been used extensively over the years in the making of hardwood doors and other products.

But what is hardwood? It is a global term used to describe many different species of timber. Hardwood comes from mainly broad-leafed deciduous trees which generally go dormant in winter time. Whereas softwood timbers comes from conifer trees which are evergreen and cone bearing.

The term “hardwood” does not necessarily mean that the wood is harder than softwood. For example Balsa wood, which is hardwood and used in model making, is considerably softer than most softwoods. On the other hand the wood species Yew, for example, is a very hard timber and is from the softwood family.

Hardwoods include species such as mahogany, ash, oak, beech, teak, maple and cherry to mention the most popular ones.

Among the softwoods you can include redwood, pine, cedar, hemlock, fir and spruce which very popular.

Hardwood is used in a variety of products such as doors, flooring boards, wall panelling, fine furniture and musical instruments. Softwood is primarily used as structural support members within buildings such as roof rafters and flooring joists.

Nowadays there are many manmade products for example PVC, aluminium and steel used in the manufacture of doors that compete with wood. They all offer so called maintenance free advantages over wood but in many cases lack the character wood has. No two pieces of wood are the same. The grain pattern and colour is different each time. With manmade products the same thing is repeated every time and they all look the same.

A wooden exterior door for example may not have total maintenance free capability offered by the man made products, but if properly prepared and treated from the start and with some continued maintenance the door will provide many years of service.

Wooden doors by far offer the best option.
