Solar Screens or Shades For the Patio

Getting protection from the sun is one of the most crucial elements of patio living and is one of those prized qualities of solar screens.  These are nothing more than a mesh material that is stretched within a metal frame, typically, and mounted on the exterior of your home or patio room windows.  These serve the purposes of both privacy and protection from the sun.  The protection aspect is best to help reduce the heat gain within your home.  By blocking up to 70% of the ultraviolet rays from entering your home, you can keep the space more comfortable and also protect your indoor furniture, rugs or walls.

If privacy is more of a concern for you, then you might be better served buying some solar shades.  These are more like a typical shade that you would find anywhere else in your home.  Sometimes, they have a more substantial fabric material on them to aid in the sun-blocking properties.  These may be called blackout blinds if you see that term.  This term is not specific to any patio shade though, it usually reflects one of the popular indoor blinds.

It might be the case that you are looking to replace some old, worn screens on your home.  This job is quite simple as well.  All you need to know how to do is remove the old mesh screen material and replace it with a new piece.  You can get it at your local home improvement warehouse.  Taking out the old screen is as simple as pulling out the spline.  You can replace it if it is old or worn or reuse it if it is in good shape.  You will need a spline tool to press it firmly into the metal frame.  The material should be about ½” wider than each edge to allow for the depth of the channel.  Then, once it is stretched into the frame, you are ready to re-hang them on your windows.
