Survival Skills 101 – Fishing

When studying how to survive outdoors, you will inevitably want to learn to catch fish to eat when you come across streams, ponds, rivers, lakes and oceans. In this article we will go over some common ways to catch fish without normal fishing gear. This techniques, along with trapping, will be some of the most important survival skills you’ll need to know should you find yourself needing them!

In survivalism a makeshift spear is a good thing to have if you come across clear steams and brooks. In shallow areas you can walk along and effectively spear any fish you see. When making a spear you should try to make it out of a thin branch and cut it off at an area where it forks off into two or three branches. leave about six inches of each branch then sharpen them down to points. It is much easier to spear a fish with a multi-pointed spear than with one with just a single point.

A simple trap can be made out of bundling supple sticks together into the shape of a funnel, then closing the top with another funnel shaped opening big enough for fish to swim into but not get back out of.

If you are practicing survivalism along a sea or an ocean you can build arching stone traps stretching out from the shore at low tide. These types of traps should be built about a foot high. When high tide comes in it will cover the wall and some fish may swim into that area. As the tide recedes again it will trap these fish in there and they can be collected easily from inside. This same thing can be done on sandy beaches but rather than building a wall you will dig out a good sided pit right along the shore. When high tide comes in fish may swim into that area and get trapped in the pit as the tide goes out again.
