Travertine Tiles For Home And Garden Décor

One of the most popular stone products for use both in the home and in the garden or yard is Travertine.  This classical Roman stone has been used for thousands of years for building and for tiling.  In fact, the Roman Coliseum is actually almost totally composed of travertine not marble like many people believe.

Travertine is a sedimentary rock that is formed by the evaporation of water in hot spring pools.  When the water evaporates it leaves behind layers of minerals and these minerals are what give the stone its wonderful hues.  The basic color of travertine tiles is soft browns but the addition of the minerals can add many accenting colors in each tile.

Travertine tiles are used for many uses in the home.  The stone makes a very nice floor tile and is very popular in entryways.  The tiles need to be sealed when used on the floor in order to protect from staining.  Since the rock is sedimentary it usually has small voids and air pockets which will allow the staining material into the structure if the surface is not sealed.  These are fairly hard and tough so the surface will wear well.

Other popular uses inside include as worktop or counter top coverings and back splashes.  They are also used as trim and accent pieces.  A very wonderful use is to tile an entire bathroom including the shower which give a very elegant old world look.

In the garden, Travertine paving stones are very popular as patio floors and also just stepping stones through the garden to keep one’s feet dry.  Being made of stone the pavers will stand up very well but they do need to be sealed from moisture in areas with freezing weather because if the water seeps in then freezes it can crack the tiles.

Travertine tiles are well worth your consideration if you are planning a renovating or remodeling project.
